From 1962 Hand-Drawn Plans to Modern Elegance on Main Road, Courtrai, Paarl ✨
There’s something special about uncovering the original architectural drawings of a home that’s stood for over six decades.
- In 2021, new owners discovered (in a cupboard) beautiful hand-drawn plans dated 3 March 1962. They detailed the “New Residence on Erf No. 7260, Courtrai Estate” in Paarl—complete with floor plans, site layout, and notes for wrought iron detailing. The home has been known ever since as “La Petite Perle du Coin,” meaning “Little Pearl of the Corner” (EST. 1962).
The name is a lovely & thoughtful tribute to Paarl’s layered heritage because the town earned its name “Die Pêrel” (The Pearl) in 1657 when explorer Abraham Gabbema saw the granite rocks of Paarl Mountain sparkling like pearls in the early morning light after rain. French Huguenot settlers arrived in 1688, bringing their elegant language and winemaking traditions, while strong English architectural and cultural influences still shaped much of the building style in the early 1960s—even though South Africa had become a republic the previous year.

We designed and installed crisp black cut-out lettering on the clean white wall. The result is clean, modern, and timeless—respectfully honouring the home’s 1962 origins while adding a contemporary touch that will endure for many more years.
